Voice Coaching

Full Voice Coaching

How can you speak so people will listen?
Are you using all of the resources in your voice in service to your intentions, visions, and purpose?
What gifts reside deep inside you that are yearning for expression?
How would your life be different if you were “unsilenced?” If your voice was alive, expressive, powerful, and clear?

No matter what you do for a living, you spend a good part of every day in conversation at work, at home, and in your community.

Individual Coaching

Full Voice coaching offers a memorable, pragmatic, and playful way to ensure that your voice is congruent with your message. Many people find that Full Voice work helps free up their creative “voice,” become more effective leaders, discover more of who they are, and become more fully alive. Barbara currently coaches from her south Minneapolis home and is exploring technology that will enable her to offer sessions via the Internet.

Five Elements Framework: Most lessons include this full range vocal warm-up. Based on the work of the Roy Hart Theatre and yoga principles, this playful stretch opens up the full menu of choices in how the voice can express.

Song Interpretation: We use singing as a way to open up more range, color, and expressiveness in the voice, no matter how much musical experience or talent the client brings. We seek out songs clients enjoy singing in keys that “fit” their range. Clients also use poetry to bring what they learn from singing into their everyday speaking voices.

Voice Technique: Breath support, singing on key, resonance, and other basic techniques are included in the lessons. The emphasis is on removing barriers and habits that hinder the natural sound and power of the voice.

Life Coaching: The voice frequently reflects aspects of what is happening in a person’s life. Sessions frequently include explorations into vocation, identity, power, visibility, vulnerability, and joy.

Policies, Logistics, and Costs

Sessions are usually one hour in length and are billed at $125 per hour. The fee is payable at each session by check or cash. Full payment is required if a session is cancelled with less than 48 hours notice, unless the session can be rescheduled into the same week. Exceptions are made at Barbara’s discretion.

Sessions are offered Monday through Thursday from 10 to 4. Because Barbara travels frequently, she is offering more intensive coaching (2 hour sessions) less frequently. Clients create practice plans to continue the work between sessions.

For Groups

Full Voice offers a memorable, pragmatic, and playful workshop that demonstrates how to make your voice congruent with your message. We explore five distinct vocal sounds, and then explore how each of them can be put to work in enhancing your everyday communication.

In this dynamic, experiential session, you will:

  • Learn the most common vocal habits that interfere with powerful communication
  • Understand how to access five essential leadership qualities through the voice
  • Increase awareness of their own vocal habits -- those that support their powerful communication and those that interfere with it
  • Discover practical ways to use the voice more effectively and to better “hear” what other people are expressing through their voices.
"I hired Barbara as a voice coach as I was uncovering my own gift in music. My experience is that going to see Barbara was much more than having a voice coach. She was a midwife to something much greater. She helped bring out my voice in ways that surpassed my singing. She reaches out to clients on a deeper "soul" level. I've heard her perform in groups and at conferences as well. She has a unique way of engaging and igniting her audiences to reach a higher place. And with her presence, knowledge, wisdom, she encourages people to expand to be all they are truly able to be. I recommend hiring her for conferences, voice coaching, or to sing at events."

"In Full Voice Barbara McAfee introduces leaders to the powerful idea of vocal presence, reminding us that how we speak and how we listen really does matter. Barbara offers us a framework and practice guide, for how to find our voice and express our ideas more clearly.

"Barbara McAfee has written a book on voice that is more a book on the art of living, through the voice. All true works of prose point back to the essential truths about ourselves--to be true to ourselves, to express who we are in the world completely, and to communicate fully with others whether we are a public speaker, musician, parent, friend, or therapist. I highly recommend this scholarly and intimate book on the art of voice."
